Former Premier League manager Tony Pulis has argued that the ongoing international break arrives at the most inconvenient moment for Tottenham Hotspur and manager Roberto de Zerbi. While significant investment often signals ambitious goals, Pulis contends that spending roughly £400m on numerous new players creates complex challenges that cannot be resolved instantly.
He likened the situation to assembling a wedding outfit by purchasing only mismatched bright-colored items—pink shoes, brown trousers, a yellow shirt, and an orange tie—resulting in a ensemble that simply does not work. This mirrors the experience at Spurs, where the board fully supported De Zerbi’s spending spree, dramatically raising fan expectations after two consecutive 17th-place finishes that narrowly avoided relegation.
Despite early disappointing results, Pulis insists it is unreasonable to suggest the manager is under pressure, particularly given he successfully secured survival last season. He emphasized that building a cohesive unit requires time, whether through training ground sessions or social interaction with players. Instead of gaining that opportunity, De Zerbi faces another three weeks away from the majority of his squad due to international duties.
Pulish noted that while De Zerbi deals with issues such as poor home form and difficulty recovering after conceding first, his primary task remains integrating new signings with existing players. He recalled his own tenure at Stoke City, where he had to reconcile two center-halves with opposing styles—Gerry Taggart and Michael Duberry—by spending extensive time in training to help them understand each other’s strengths and work in unison.
The ex-manager pointed out that clubs like Sunderland and Brighton often see quick integration because they maintain a consistent identity, whereas Spurs are attempting to reshape their squad entirely without a pre-season together. This disrupts the coach’s ability to assess his squad and impose principles from the start.
Pulis also highlighted the importance of understanding players off the pitch, citing his time at West Brom where he bonded with South American players and their families to build trust. He argued that knowing individual personalities and lifestyles is vital for a demanding coach like De Zerbi, whose front-foot playing style requires every new arrival to adapt quickly. With time being a scarce resource for modern managers, Pulis urged patience, praising De Zerbi’s passion and ambition while reminding supporters that successful team building is a gradual process.
