Meta is re-entering the virtual reality hardware market with a new product called Meta VR Glasses, announced Wednesday at its Connect event. The device marks a significant shift in form factor and content integration compared to the company’s previous headsets, emphasizing portability and high-fidelity entertainment.
The glasses are constructed from magnesium alloy and run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor. They are designed to be approximately five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3, offering a profile that closely resembles conventional eyewear rather than a bulky headset. To maintain this slim silhouette, the device utilizes a separate computing and battery puck that users can carry in their pocket.
Visually, the glasses feature micro-OLED panels embedded in the lenses, delivering a 5K Infinite Display with a density of 37 pixels per degree. Audio is handled through Dolby Atmos support, and the display is compatible with Dolby Vision. Meta has positioned the device primarily as an entertainment tool, allowing users to download and stream movies directly.
A key selling point is the device’s certification as the “first IMAX Enhanced certified VR device ever.” Meta states that the glasses will support the expanded aspect ratios characteristic of IMAX films, offering one of the few ways to experience that specific high-resolution viewing format.
Additionally, the hardware supports 3D content and spatial integration, blending the user’s real-world surroundings with the media being consumed. Meta has partnered with Disney to bring this capability to streaming; starting in November, Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch select titles, including certain Marvel films, in 3D. The company describes this feature as transforming a movie into an immersive, VR-like experience complete with dynamic effects and spatial audio.
Meta AI is built into the system, enabling voice-activated control for tasks such as starting playback. Users can also issue commands via hand gestures. Pricing is set at $1,299.99, with availability expected next spring.
Marvel in 3D on Disney+ is the real hook here. The specs are great, but the content is what sells it.
