The finalists of the $11 million XPRIZE Wildfire competition were recently recognized for innovations in space-based detection and autonomous firefighting drones. While no team secured either of the two grand prizes, the event highlighted emerging technologies designed to assist as global wildfire disasters become increasingly costly.
The competition featured two distinct tracks. The First Prize track required teams to identify every fire across a vast area of Australia within 10 minutes using satellite data. Meanwhile, the Autonomous Response Prize track challenged participants to autonomously locate and extinguish a high-risk fire in rural Alaska while disregarding decoy signals, also within a 10-minute window.
Andrea Santy, program director of XPRIZE Wildfire, emphasized the goal of supporting first responders. “We want to be able to prepare and provide tools for firefighters to really allow them to do the best job,” Santy told Ars Technica. She noted that while firefighters excel at their duties, it is unjust to keep risking their lives when new technology is becoming available to protect them, local communities, and ecosystems.
