As a new academic term begins alongside a change in prime ministership, questions are being raised about the future of the English curriculum. In a feature for The Guardian, distinguished writers such as Ben Okri and Samantha Harvey were invited to select novels they believe could foster a lifelong passion for reading among students.
This call for change comes at a notable moment, as the United Kingdom now has its first prime minister with an English degree. While many of his 58 predecessors did not attend university, those who did typically pursued subjects like history, classics, philosophy, politics, and economics.
Proponents of the initiative emphasize that engaging with fiction serves as vital preparation for life. Novels are seen as essential tools for developing empathy, allowing readers to understand different perspectives and navigate complex emotional landscapes. Additionally, they provide entertainment and joy.
Beyond personal development, the economic case for literature is significant. The creative industries generate approximately £145.8bn annually for the UK economy, a contribution described as a “soft superpower.” The overarching message is that both books and reading remain fundamental to society.
