The second day of the United Nations General Assembly in New York is underway, featuring addresses from various European leaders, with separate meetings scheduled between Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later in the week.
French President Emmanuel Macron delivered his final speech to the general assembly before the conclusion of his presidency. In a forceful address, he cautioned against a global shift toward a “law of the jungle” and rejected what he described as a new order of impunity sought by some nations.
Macron highlighted the diplomatic situation regarding Palestine, noting that approximately a dozen states had recognized the country just a year prior. He challenged critics who dismiss such recognitions as mere symbolic gestures, asking about the credibility of the international community if it remains passive in the face of the crisis in Gaza.
He also criticized the notion of an existing peace, stating that humanitarian access has not been restored despite claims to the contrary. Macron further addressed the escalating violations in the West Bank, emphasizing that Hamas does not operate in the region and arguing that current actions are making a two-state solution increasingly impossible.
“What is happening there is building, day by day, the impossibility of a project that should be based on respect for the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to exist,” Macron said, calling the situation a spectacle that should shame the world.
