100th Anniversary of the Ring of Dust: Remembering Dempsey vs. Tunney

On September 23, 1926, two of the most formidable heavyweights in American history squared off before a crowd of 120,000 spectators in Philadelphia. The encounter, widely regarded as one of the greatest sports spectacles ever witnessed in the United States, is now marking its centenary.

The rivalry between Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney produced two championship bouts that remain among the most storied in the sport’s annals. The initial contest drew the attention of an entire nation, cementing its place in cultural memory.

Dempsey, known for bridging the gap between boxing’s traditional and modern eras, was celebrated as one of the most charismatic fighters in history. According to biographer Randy Roberts, Dempsey’s early life was defined by hardship. As a youth, he resided in mining camps and hobo jungles, traveled by riding railroad rods, and frequently begged for food.

What distinguished Dempsey from his peers, Roberts notes, was his willingness—and even eagerness—to work. He accepted any form of employment available, ranging from washing dishes, cutting lawns, and scrubbing floors to more arduous labor such as coal mining, digging ditches, and fruit picking.
