Almost 130 heads of state and government gathered in New York on Tuesday for the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Brazil’s President Lula, adhering to the tradition of speaking first, addressed the state of global democracy and the United Nations’ effectiveness. “Brazilian democracy belongs to Brazilians,” Lula said. “Brazil is nobody’s backyard.” He criticized the UN for failing to fulfill its primary mission of saving humanity from the devastation of war.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung also took the podium, proposing a three-part framework for “peaceful coexistence” with North Korea. His plan calls on Pyongyang to first halt the expansion of its nuclear program before moving toward reduction.

As the general debate continues, delegates face a packed schedule of addresses and bilateral meetings, with the NYPD maintaining a heavy security presence around the UN headquarters.
