Following a legal settlement with 12 states that sought to block Paramount’s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the studio has moved significantly closer to solidifying its position as a major global production powerhouse.
As part of the agreement, Paramount has committed to spending at least $300 million additional funds on film and television projects produced within the United States. Furthermore, the studio pledged to release a minimum of 30 movies per year once the absorption of WBD is complete.
While these commitments appear designed to reassure regulators and the entertainment industry that the merger will not harm competition or output, an analysis of the studios’ recent production history suggests a more complex reality regarding Paramount CEO Dav’s strategy.
Is this really about competition or just saving jobs? Seems like a lot of extra spending to appease regulators who didn’t have much say.
Thirty films a year sounds great until you realize that guarantees quantity over quality. Hope they keep the budget healthy too.
