Beats Unveils Modular 360 Headphones with Custom Chip and Broad Appeal

Beats has officially launched the Beats 360 headphones, positioning them as a premium upgrade above the existing Studio Pro model. During a recent interview, Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple Music and Beats, outlined the design philosophy behind the new earworn device, emphasizing modularity, broad demographic appeal, and a distinct engineering approach separate from Apple’s AirPods line.

The Beats 360 features a highly customizable design, allowing users to swap ear cushions and headbands to mix and match colors and materials. Schusser compared the experience to owning multiple pairs of sneakers, noting that while the trend resonates strongly with younger consumers, the product is intended for a wide audience ranging from children to older adults. Two cushion options are available: a fabric version designed for workouts and an eco-friendly leather alternative for style-conscious users.

Despite the radical shift in aesthetic, Schusser insisted that the core Beats identity remains intact. The iconic lowercase “b” logo and vibrant color palette ensure the headphones are recognizable as part of the brand, complementing other products like the Powerbeats Pro 2 and various iPhone cases. Although Beats is not producing cases for the upcoming iPhone 18 this year, the company maintains a cohesive look across its accessory ecosystem.

A key technical distinction between the Beats 360 and Apple’s AirPods Max is the absence of Apple’s proprietary audio chip. Instead, Beats relies on a new generation of its own custom chip, optimized for both iOS and Android devices. Schusser highlighted that despite using different silicon, the headphones still support Apple-specific features such as Find My and seamless auto-switching between devices. He emphasized that Beats operates with a degree of autonomy while remaining fully integrated into Apple’s engineering, operations, and manufacturing networks.

Schusser rejected the notion that Beats competes with Apple Audio, suggesting instead that the two brands serve different use cases. He noted that many customers own both products, utilizing AirPods for daily commuting and Beats for fitness activities. “The great thing for the customer is that the customer has more choice,” he said, describing both as premium options.

Looking beyond headphones, Beats is expanding its portfolio into lifestyle accessories. The brand has recently introduced USB cables and phone cases, leveraging its expertise in custom cable design. Schusser indicated that future product launches will be selective, aiming to add value rather than flood the market. Rumors have surfaced regarding a potential Beats-branded game controller for iPhones, though no official confirmation has been made.

For now, the Beats 360 stands as the company’s flagship announcement, representing a bold step toward a more personalized and versatile audio experience while maintaining the sporty, music-centric vibe that has defined the brand since its inception.

  1. I bought the fabric cushions for gym sessions. Total game changer compared to the leather ones which get way too sweaty.

  2. The modular design sounds like a great idea, but I hope the replacement parts don’t get discontinued after a year.
