The United Nations General Assembly has endorsed a resolution aimed at correcting the geographical distortions present in widely used maps, specifically those that underestimate the size of Africa. The move targets the centuries-old Mercator projection, which has been the standard for global mapping since its inception.
Advocates for the resolution argue that the Mercator map significantly distorts the scale of nations, particularly those near the equator. This distortion, they contend, influences global perceptions and can inadvertently reinforce biased views about the importance and magnitude of African countries compared to nations in higher latitudes.
By approving this change, the UN intends to promote a more accurate understanding of global geography, ensuring that Africa is represented with the true proportions it deserves on world maps.
