A technical equipment failure at the Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility triggered significant flight delays and ground stops across the New York City metropolitan area on Monday morning.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a ground stop was initiated at approximately 10 a.m. for Newark Liberty International Airport. The restriction was extended multiple times and remained in effect until at least 2:45 p.m.
The disruption later spread to other regional hubs. A ground stop was imposed at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 12:38 p.m. and at LaGuardia Airport at 12:43 p.m. Both of these restrictions were scheduled to last until 2 p.m.
FAA officials confirmed that flights into Philadelphia International Airport and Teterboro Airport were also paused. A spokesperson attributed the ground stop to issues with certain communication frequencies at the Philadelphia TRACON, the air traffic control facility responsible for guiding aircraft during approach and departure phases.
The FAA has not yet disclosed the specific cause of the technical outage. Travelers are advised to monitor their flight status directly with their respective airlines for the most current information regarding departures and arrivals.
