Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Reveals GLP-1 Weight Loss Journey, Deflects 2028 Presidential Speculation

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker disclosed on Monday’s episode of “CBS Mornings” that he has utilized GLP-1 weight-loss medication for the past two years, a regimen that has resulted in an 80-pound reduction. The governor described feeling significantly improved by the transformation, noting that he has struggled with excess weight since childhood.

Pritzker connected his health concerns to a traumatic family history, recalling the death of his father, Donald, who succumbed to a heart attack at age 39 while playing tennis. The incident, which occurred when his mother was present, prompted Pritzker to monitor his blood work closely throughout his life.

Despite this vigilance, the demands of governing America’s sixth-most-populous state contributed to further weight gain, drawing public criticism from former President Donald Trump during the 2024 campaign. Trump had mocked the governor’s eating habits on the campaign trail, stating, “Pritzker, I don’t know, he’s too busy eating. He wants to eat all the time.”

The turning point for Pritzker came two years ago when he received a diabetes diagnosis. His physician advised him to begin GLP-1 treatment, suggesting it would be a lifelong necessity. First Lady MK Pritzker supported the decision, citing the desire for her husband to remain healthy for as long as possible given their family history.

Pritzker revealed that he noticed decreased appetite within days of starting the medication, losing two pounds in his first week. While he acknowledged that the journey was not instantaneous, he emphasized the personal significance of finally achieving his weight-loss goals.

When pressed by journalists regarding whether the physical changes were aimed at positioning himself for a 2028 presidential bid, Pritzker dismissed the notion. “I’ve been driven my whole life to lose weight,” he said. “I have not made any decisions about what I might do in the future. I can tell you I want to be the governor of the state of Illinois for a while longer, and I’m running for reelection.”

On a policy level, Pritzker highlighted that the state now covers GLP-1 medications for approximately 55,000 state employees through its insurance plan. He argued that the coverage is a fiscal benefit, as reduced obesity rates are expected to lower healthcare costs associated with diabetes and other weight-related conditions. Citing one employee who credited the initiative with saving her life, the governor encouraged residents to consider the treatment under medical supervision.

  1. I never realized GLP-1s could yield such dramatic results so quickly. Definitely going to discuss this with my doctor.

  2. Wait, he claims no 2028 plans but suddenly looks this good? The political timing here feels a little convenient to me.

  3. It is genuinely inspiring to see a public figure be so open about health struggles. Thanks for the honesty, Governor.
