CNN, MSNBC, and Politico File Lawsuit to Challenge White House Ban

CNN, MSNBC, and Politico announced Monday that they are filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration to challenge the ban prohibiting them from entering the White House. The news outlets argue the restriction violates the First Amendment.

The dispute began after President Trump stated on Truth Social on Friday that he was barring the three organizations from the presidential residence. This move marks the latest effort by the administration to target media outlets perceived as providing unfavorable coverage. The affected networks had their press passes revoked after being denied entry on Saturday.

In a joint legal statement, the organizations described the ban as a “direct assault on the First Amendment.” They noted that while presidents have historically disagreed with press coverage, the current action represents an unprecedented barrier to access. The lawsuit is seeking immediate relief from a Washington, D.C., judge to prevent further enforcement of the ban.

President Trump defended the decision during remarks to reporters on Friday, stating there was “no reason” for the timing of the ban and suggesting it was not tied to any specific incident. He characterized the coverage from these outlets as “fake news” lacking credibility. “If they want to write them, that’s fine, but I don’t have to let them into my — into the people’s house,” Trump said.

Bruce Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, called the ban “flatly unconstitutional,” describing it as textbook viewpoint discrimination that he expects courts to strike down quickly.

This legal battle follows a pattern of similar conflicts between the Trump administration and the press. Last year, Trump barred The Associated Press from certain White House events after the wire service refused to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.” While a federal judge initially ordered AP’s access restored, an appeals court later allowed the restrictions to stand because they applied to limited spaces like the Oval Office and Air Force One, rather than areas generally open to the press.

During that ongoing litigation, the White House assumed control of the rotating press pool, reducing access for wire services to restricted areas. Additionally, the administration previously imposed new security rules on Pentagon access, leading many major networks, including CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and CNN, to withdraw from the Pentagon press corps.

In the previous Trump administration, the White House attempted to revoke the press pass of former CNN reporter Jim Acosta. A federal judge ruled in favor of Acosta, citing violations of due process rights under the Fifth Amendment, and the administration complied with the order to restore his access.
