Elon Musk Proposes Hyperloop Link Between Austin and San Antonio

Elon Musk announced that his tunneling venture, The Boring Company, is working on a preliminary Hyperloop system intended to connect Austin and San Antonio, Texas. In a recent social media post, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO claimed the project would cut travel time between the two major Texas cities to under 30 minutes.

The Boring Company’s official account echoed Musk’s statement, expressing enthusiasm and readiness to undertake such a significant infrastructure undertaking. However, the proposal comes amidst skepticism, as many of the company’s previously announced initiatives—including tunnel networks planned for Chicago, Los Angeles, and the corridor between New York City and Washington, D.C.—have failed to come to fruition.

The company currently operates a functional transportation system in Las Vegas that integrates both subterranean tunnels and surface-level routes. Additionally, The Boring Company recently secured a $3 billion funding round led by investors from the United Arab Emirates, signaling continued financial backing despite past delays.

Musk shared his vision for the Austin-San Antonio link in response to an AI-generated video depicting a futuristic scenario featuring human colonies on other planets. Reposting the content, Musk declared, “This is the future we shall bring into being.”

Critics have long argued that Musk’s architectural and technological ambitions are heavily influenced by pulp science fiction and comic books. Historian Jill Lepore recently noted in an interview that Musk appears to favor sci-fi narratives that contradict his own political ideologies, suggesting a disconnect between his fictional inspirations and practical governance.

As interest in high-speed transit solutions grows, observers will be watching to see if The Boring Company can deliver on this new promise or if it will join the list of unexecuted projects associated with the entrepreneur.

  1. Another grand promise from Musk? I’ll believe it when I see a track actually laid in Texas, not just more renderings.
