To adjust these controls on modern devices, navigate to Settings, select Advanced features, and choose Side button. Here, a double press can be configured to open a variety of tools, including the flashlight, magnifier, Samsung Notes, Modes and Routines, or a user-specified application. The long-press function is more restricted, limited to AI assistants such as Bixby, Google Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude, or it can be set to bring up the power menu. Notably, for Galaxy Z Flip owners, the button’s behavior may shift depending on whether the clamshell device is open or closed.
Owners of earlier models featuring a dedicated physical Bixby button—including the Galaxy S8 through S10 series and the Note 8 and Note 9—can still customize their experience. For these devices, a long press will always trigger Bixby Voice. However, users can adjust the single and double-press functions by accessing Settings, then Advanced features, and finally Bixby Key. This allows the button to open a specific app or execute a command, though the single and double-press options cannot be customized simultaneously within the Bixby Home interface.
One of the most practical uses for this customization is integrating Modes and Routines. Drivers, for instance, can program the side button to engage Driving Mode, which automatically enables hands-free calling, opens navigation apps, reads incoming messages aloud, and sends auto-replies. Additionally, individuals who frequently need to capture ideas or meeting details can assign the Voice Recorder to a double press, allowing them to start recording immediately without unlocking the phone or searching for the application.
Honestly, I just keep the default settings. I’ve never remembered to change them, and honestly, I rarely use those extra shortcuts anyway.
