American Airlines Passenger Duct-Taped to Seat Following Mid-Flight Outburst

An American Airlines flight traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was forced to make an emergency landing in Baltimore late Thursday night due to the actions of a disruptive passenger. The airline confirmed the incident on Friday.

Witnesses on board described a chaotic scene that began approximately two hours into the flight. Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer, and fellow passenger Richard Olenick told CBS News New York that the situation posed a risk to everyone on board.

According to reports, the passenger appeared to be intoxicated and initially began yelling at a seated neighbor. When a flight attendant attempted to de-escalate the conflict, the man allegedly directed racial slurs and homophobic remarks at the crew member before becoming violent.

The escalation prompted the flight crew to restrain the individual using duct tape, securing him to his seat. The decision led to the plane’s diversion to Baltimore, where law enforcement took the man into custody. After his removal, the flight resumed its journey to Newark.

American Airlines issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to safety. “The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority and we do not tolerate violence. We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding,” the airline said.

The FBI confirmed to CBS News that the passenger is currently held on state charges, but federal investigation is ongoing. Agents are conducting interviews to gather facts and will consult with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to determine if federal charges will be filed. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect.
