A simple factory reset is often insufficient on its own because deleted data can remain technically recoverable. To ensure security, users should perform comprehensive backups, deactivate software licenses, and utilize built-in secure erase tools specific to their operating system.
Back Up Important Data
The first step in the deprecation process is preserving your files. On Windows systems, users can access Windows Backup through the Start menu to manage OneDrive storage. Authentication with both the computer password and Apple ID credentials is required to remove Activation Lock. For older Intel-based Macs, users must first manually sign out of iCloud through System Preferences. Then, by holding Command + R during restart to enter Recovery Mode, they can use Disk Utility to erase the drive—selecting APFS for SSDs—and choose to reinstall macOS if the device is intended for a new owner.
