MIAMI — A new tropical cyclone has developed in the northern Atlantic, though officials say it is not currently expected to impact any coastline.
Tropical Storm Fay formed early Sunday morning and was positioned approximately 450 miles (730 kilometers) southwest of the Azores archipelago, an autonomous region of Portugal located about 800 miles off the coast of mainland Europe. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, no coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect.
Data collected at 5 a.m. EDT indicated maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph). Forecasters anticipate that the storm may undergo additional strengthening in the near term.
The system was moving in a north-northeasterly direction at a speed of 5 mph (7 kph).
No immediate threat is good news. Hopefully this one dissipates before picking up too much strength.
Fascinating that it formed southwest of the Azores. Hopefully it stays on track and doesn’t turn toward Portugal.
Another storm already? And they say it might strengthen. This season is shaping up to be quite active indeed.
Glad it’s staying far out in the Atlantic. The Azores usually get a lot of attention during hurricane season though!
