It has been six decades since the Animal Welfare Act was enacted, yet dogs continue to face systemic abuse, according to ASPCA senior vice president Nancy Perry. In a recent op-ed, Perry argued that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has chronically failed to enforce the law, leaving animals vulnerable.
Perry emphasized that legislative action is urgently needed to address these enforcement gaps. Specifically, she called on Congress to pass Goldie’s Act, a measure designed to strengthen protections and ensure the USDA properly upholds its mandate to safeguard dogs from neglect and abuse.
Surprised it’s taken six decades to address this. The USDA really needs stricter oversight and penalties.
As a rescue volunteer, I see these enforcement failures daily. Strongly support this legislation.
How many more years until Goldie’s Act becomes law? Sixty is already far too long.
