The procedure for selecting a preferred phone varies by manufacturer. Some systems allow users to designate a primary device within the Bluetooth or device management menus, granting it priority when multiple paired phones are detected. Brands such as Hyundai enable users to toggle between CarPlay and Android Auto connections on the fly, with the system remembering the selection for future sessions.
When software settings fail to resolve the issue, a practical workaround is to manually disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the unintended iPhone. Another commonly attempted strategy involves using a wired CarPlay connection to force priority over a wireless device, though anecdotal reports from online communities suggest this method yields inconsistent results.
For passengers seeking to control entertainment without disrupting the driver’s primary interface, Apple’s SharePlay feature offers an alternative. Available since iOS 17, SharePlay allows iPhone users to join the driver’s Apple Music session, enabling them to add, reorder, or remove tracks from their own devices. Only the host requires an active Apple Music subscription.
Similarly, Spotify users can utilize the app’s Jam feature, which permits in-person group participation in the audio queue without requiring Premium subscriptions for all participants. It is important to note that these sharing features are limited to media control; passengers requiring access to navigation, messaging, or other CarPlay functions must still manually switch the main vehicle connection to their device.
