Prime Video has canceled “Spider-Noir” after a single season, Variety reports. The eight-episode Marvel-related drama, which marked Nicolas Cage’s first regular television role, will not return for Season 2.
The cancellation comes as the series enters Emmy award weekend with 11 nominations, the most for any Prime Video program this year. The show has also garnered strong critical reception, holding a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% audience score.
“Spider-Noir” serves as the inaugural release from Amazon’s partnership with Sony Pictures TV to develop content featuring characters from the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Sony oversees more than 900 Marvel figures tied to the Spider-Man franchise, and a second series from the deal is currently in development and expected to be announced soon.
Adapted for television by Oren Uziel, the series is set during the Great Depression and stars Cage as Ben Reilly, a troubled private investigator in 1930s New York who becomes the city’s sole superhero. The supporting cast includes Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson.
Uziel and Steve Lightfoot serve as showrunners and executive producers, alongside Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Aditya Sood, Dan Shear, Amy Pascal, Cage, and Pavlina Hatoupis. Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the pilot episodes.
The series premiered on the MGM+ linear channel on May 25 before streaming on Prime Video the following day, offering viewers a choice between color and black-and-white formats. Nielsen data indicated the show accumulated 2.6 billion viewing minutes over its first six weeks.
Among its Emmy nods are categories including Outstanding Production Design, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Original Music Composition, Visual Effects, Stunt Coordination, and Prosthetic Makeup. This marks the first series output from the Amazon-Sony deal, following the cancellation of the originally greenlit project “Silk: Spider Society.”
Sony continues to see significant success in the Spider-Man film franchise, currently collaborating with Marvel Studios on the Tom Holland-led series. Its latest theatrical release, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” has surpassed $900 million domestically and $2.3 billion globally at the box office.
