A six-week-old girl in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died from measles, the county coroner confirmed to local media on Friday. The finding directly counters previous claims by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had disputed that the infant succumbed to the vaccine-preventable disease.
Stephen Diamantoni, the Republican coroner first elected in 2007, stated that the baby passed away at home. He identified the date of death as approximately August 18.
Diamantoni also noted that the child had Amish lethal microcephaly, a rare genetic disorder prevalent in the Old Order Amish community of Pennsylvania, affecting roughly one in 500 births. Caused by a mutation in the SLC25A19 gene, the condition results in unusually small heads and underdeveloped brains. Infants born with the disorder typically survive only about six months.
