Suspect detained after attempted arson at German synagogue

Prosecutors in Wuppertal, Germany, announced on Friday that they are leading the investigation into an attempted arson attack on a local synagogue. The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old Afghan national, was apprehended shortly after the incident and made comments indicating an antisemitic motive during his arrest.

The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon when the man allegedly threw three containers of flammable liquid onto a stairwell and doorway that serve as the entrance to the synagogue and its adjacent eatery, Cafe Negev. He then ignited the substance. A staff member quickly extinguished the flames, preventing injuries and limiting structural damage, according to police reports.

Authorities state that video surveillance footage has led them to strongly suspect the detainee of setting the fire. In addition to the arson charges, the suspect is being investigated for attempted aggravated arson. He was scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday.

A search of the suspect’s apartment revealed several knives and a machete, which were kept in an accessible location. Prosecutors also confirmed that the man has a prior criminal record involving threats against a female neighbor. Investigators are currently examining data from his confiscated mobile phone.

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, condemned the incident, noting that it took place during the buildup to Yom Kippur, a major Jewish holiday occurring on September 20 and 21. Schuster expressed particular alarm at the calculated nature of the broad-daylight attack.

Locals showed solidarity with approximately 30 people gathering outside the synagogue on Thursday evening. Wuppertal, located in the North Rhine-Westphalia state east of Düsseldorf, is home to roughly 350,000 residents.
