Ministers have been called upon to present a credible strategy for British Steel after the government spending watchdog highlighted the escalating financial burden of keeping the struggling manufacturer afloat. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) warned that costs associated with sustaining the state-owned enterprise are rising at a “startling” rate, with no visible end to the financial support in sight.
British Steel was placed under public ownership in July with the stated aim of safeguarding the future of domestic steel production. This intervention followed a previous government rescue in November 2025, when officials stepped in to prevent the closure of the Scunthorpe steelworks and protect approximately 4,000 jobs from redundancy.
The PAC’s remarks underscore growing concerns within Parliament regarding the fiscal sustainability of the bailout and the need for a definitive long-term plan from the Labour government.
Happened under the last government too. Isn’t it ironic the watchdog is now warning about costs for a Labour-owned firm?
4,000 jobs are at stake, sure. But bailing it out indefinitely without a plan seems like buying time, not solving the problem.
I work in manufacturing. Without a clear commercial roadmap, this subsidy trap will only get worse. What’s the end game here?
Startling costs with no plan? That sounds like fiscal negligence, not industrial strategy. Someone needs to answer for these rising bills.
