An F-16 fighter jet originating from Texas crashed in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, on Thursday, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. The aircraft was participating in a routine training exercise at the time of the incident.
Emergency management officials stated that the order applies to a section of County Road 633 stretching from Jefferson Place to Blair Townhall Road. Residents in the affected area have been instructed to remain indoors, close windows and ventilation systems, and follow directives from emergency personnel. Traffic in the vicinity has been shut down as responders made their way to the scene.
A spokesperson for the 149th Fighter Wing of the Texas National Guard confirmed that the pilot successfully ejected before the crash and is currently in stable condition while receiving medical treatment.
Blair Township Supervisor Nicole Blonshine reported that there are no known injuries on the ground and no reported damage to homes. She did not disclose the cause of the crash, the specific operator of the aircraft, or whether any other individuals were aboard.
Officials urged the public to stay away from the crash site as the investigation proceeds.
