Palantir CEO Urges ‘Reasonable Guidelines’ for AI Regulation

During an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Thursday, Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp advocated for the establishment of sensible regulatory frameworks governing artificial intelligence. His comments came amid ongoing deliberations among technology executives and policy makers regarding the oversight of AI systems.

Karp acknowledged the necessity of regulation but emphasized the difficulty in implementation. “You have to find a way to set reasonable guidelines that are enforced, but you can’t do it,” he stated, highlighting the challenges inherent in crafting workable rules for such a rapidly evolving sector.

Despite these difficulties, Karp pointed to corporate accountability as a foundational mechanism for safety. “The first line of defense is you’re liable for your own actions,” he explained, suggesting that holding companies responsible for their AI deployments is a critical component of any regulatory approach.

The interview followed Karp’s recent participation in the G20 Innovation Ministerial held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on September 2, 2026. The event, organized by the Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Department of Commerce, served as a precursor to the G20 summit scheduled for December at President Donald Trump’s golf club in Doral, Florida.

As tech leaders continue to navigate the balance between innovation and safety, Karp’s remarks underscore the industry’s push for guidelines that are both practical and enforceable.

  1. It’s refreshing to hear a CEO actually advocate for accountability instead of just demanding deregulation. Finally, some realism.

  2. I hope ‘reasonable guidelines’ doesn’t just become another loophole for tech giants to exploit while ignoring safety concerns.
