A Florida Republican congresswoman has unveiled a campaign advertisement directly challenging Donald Trump’s immigration strategies, highlighting a growing fracture within the GOP as the party seeks to distance itself from the president’s agenda ahead of the November midterm elections.
In the 30-second spot, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar addresses Trump personally, stating, “Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far.” She further cites specific detention statistics to bolster her critique, noting that in July, half of the 50,000 individuals detained had no criminal record.
“Be careful what your advisers are telling you about immigration policy,” Salazar added in the ad. The release of the commercial represents the latest indication that a central pillar of Trump’s 2024 re-election platform has become a political liability for his congressional allies.
