Canada’s Carney Champions ‘Associate’ EU Status Amid Rising US Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday, advocating for closer ties between Canada and the EU and welcoming the prospect of an “associate membership.” The proposal comes against a backdrop of deteriorating relations between Ottawa and Washington, as US President Donald Trump has threatened severe trade consequences should the EU grant such a status.

In a speech delivered in English, French, and German, Carney highlighted the shared democratic values, commitment to the rule of law, and defense of human rights that bind the two sides. “We are not fair-weather allies,” he told the assembly, drawing applause. “Our commitment to the rule of law… share the same deep roots, the same unwavering dedication.” He emphasized that while Europe and Canada are individually strong, they are “even stronger together.”
