Authorities in New Mexico reported three fatalities early Wednesday morning after flash floodwaters swept through part of the Navajo Nation. The victims were identified as two adults and a child.
Navajo Tribal Police received a call around 12:30 a.m. regarding individuals being carried away by water near the community of Newcomb in northwestern New Mexico. The incident follows a day of torrential rain that left roads and surrounding areas submerged, with additional storms moving in overnight.
Search and rescue teams located the bodies of the three victims. Police stated that the drownings are currently under investigation, though they withheld further details regarding the specific circumstances.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed his condolences and thanked emergency responders for their efforts in hazardous conditions.

This area floods frequently. Why aren’t there better early warning systems in place for these remote communities?
Heartbreaking news. My thoughts are with the families and the Navajo community during this difficult time.
