James Comer, the Republican chair of the House oversight committee, has criticized billionaire Leon Black for filing a lawsuit against Congress rather than appearing for a deposition related to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein. Comer stated that Black is using litigation as a means to avoid providing answers to the public regarding the federal government’s long-standing failure to protect survivors of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
Black, who denies any wrongdoing, initiated legal action on Thursday, arguing that the subpoenas were improper. Comer responded by calling the move a shame, emphasizing that the investigation is focused on how Epstein sought to gain favor with influential individuals to evade scrutiny.
The oversight chair highlighted that Black’s testimony is essential to the probe, noting that he was a paying client of Epstein and is subject to several nondisclosure agreements. The committee is considering next steps, with some Democrats calling for Black to be held in contempt for defying two subpoenas.
