Israel and Morocco have reached an agreement to upgrade their diplomatic relationship, which includes raising their respective missions to full embassy status and appointing ambassadors to each nation. The decision was announced during a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers in New York on Wednesday.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz hosted the talks between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. Beyond diplomatic upgrades, the ministers agreed to strengthen economic and trade ties, with plans to finalize two specific agreements by the end of the year focusing on investment protection and the prevention of double taxation.
In a joint statement issued on behalf of the United States, Israel, and Morocco, the US mission to the UN emphasized that “the establishment of full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel is in the common interest of both countries and will advance the cause of peace.”
The agreement also encompasses an expansion of air travel, including the reinstatement of direct flights operated by carriers from both nations. Both sides confirmed plans for high-level bilateral visits scheduled for the coming months.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of the sixth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, a normalization initiative spearheaded by former US President Donald Trump. The accords have brought Israel into closer relations with several other nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Kazakhstan, aiming to foster ties between Israel and Arab and Muslim-majority countries.
