Rescue teams in Algeria are engaged in a desperate bid to save a 10-year-old boy, Ayoub, who fell into an 80-metre-deep well in the El Ghassoul municipality in the country’s southwest.
The incident occurred two days ago, with Ayoub reportedly tumbling into the dry well while in the area. His disappearance triggered an immediate alarm among local residents, who alerted authorities.
Emergency crews, including firefighters and medical personnel, have been on-site since the call came in, deploying specialised equipment to lower themselves into the narrow shaft and reach the young boy.
The operation is being conducted with urgency, as every hour deepens the risk to Ayoub’s wellbeing. Rescuers face challenging conditions, including limited space within the well and potential complications from the boy’s physical and mental state after nearly two days without adequate sustenance.
Local media reported that neighbours gathered at the site to assist, while the municipality’s emergency services coordinated the complex extraction attempt.
As of Wednesday, the rescue operation remains ongoing, with authorities declining to provide further details on Ayoub’s condition. The community remains hopeful as the race against time continues.
