Warwickshire strengthened their pursuit of the Rothesay County Championship title with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Essex, completed in just two days. The win sees them move closer to the summit of Division One.
Sam Hain was instrumental in the chase, remaining unbeaten on 88 to help the Bears reach their target of 133 with eight wickets in hand and only two days required. Before that, Manav Suthar proved decisive with the ball, claiming five wickets for 75 runs to restrict Essex to 189 in their second innings, having already trailed by 57 runs after the first innings.
While Warwickshire celebrated, league leaders Somerset kept pressure on the title race. They recovered from a precarious 86 for eight to defeat Yorkshire. Craig Overton top-scored with 64 off 111 balls as Somerset reached 201 all out in reply to Yorkshire’s 212. After falling for a duck, Overton struck twice with the new ball to bowl Yorkshire out for 192, setting up a lead of 139 before the close.
In other Division One action, Sussex gained the upper hand at Hove, finishing the day on 308 for six in response to Nottinghamshire’s 240. Tom Clarke contributed 89, while Charlie Tear and Tom Price (56 not out) also crossed the half-century mark.
Hampshire are firmly in control against Leicestershire, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 124 from opener Nick Gubbins. Gubbins played 224 balls and hit 15 fours, helping Hampshire reach 255 for three in their second innings, a substantial lead of 225 runs.
Glamorgan also found themselves in a commanding position against Surrey. Asa Tribe’s magnificent unbeaten 142 guided his side to 339 for five in their second innings, giving them a massive lead of 356 runs.
In Division Two, Kent kept their promotion dreams intact, closing day two on 84 for two in their chase of 140 against Lancashire. Lancashire had posted 214 and bowled out Kent for 192 earlier. Sam Northeast (23) and Tawanda Muyeye (37) laid the foundations for a likely victory.
Worcestershire fought back against Durham, ending day two on 270 for five in reply to Durham’s 465, powered by unbeaten scores of 87 from Adam Hose and 82 from Brett D’Oliveira. Meanwhile, Northamptonshire trail Derbyshire by 62 runs after being bundled out for 310, and Middlesex hold a 47-run advantage with ten second-innings wickets remaining against Gloucestershire.

Hain’s knock was solid, but Suthar’s five wickets were the real match-winner. Proper professional performance.
Interesting that Somerset won too but Essex didn’t seem to care. Did the Bears have something to prove?
