Amazon Announces $1 Per Hour Wage Increase for U.S. Workers

Amazon has announced a wage adjustment that raises the minimum starting pay for its U.S. core operations workforce to $20 per hour. The move increases hourly wages by $1 for eligible employees, bringing the company’s average hourly pay to approximately $24.

The announcement was made Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2026, and covers workers such as delivery drivers and fulfillment center staff. In a blog post, Amazon Senior Vice President Udit Madan highlighted that when industry-leading benefits are included, the average total compensation exceeds $32 per hour.

The financial commitment for these raises is estimated at over $1.5 billion, representing roughly 0.06% of Amazon’s $2.68 trillion market capitalization. Beyond the wage increase, the company introduced a new low-cost banking program called Day 1 Financial, which provides employees with memberships in the First Tech Federal Credit Union.

Employees will also receive retail benefits, including a 20% discount on in-store purchases at Whole Foods Market and a 10% discount on online grocery orders. These additions supplement existing perks such as free Prime memberships, prepaid education programs, and healthcare coverage.

Reaction from some workers on an Amazon fulfillment center subreddit appeared tepid. Regarding the grocery discount, one employee quipped about the company’s long-standing reputation for high prices, suggesting the discount would only bring Whole Foods costs in line with regular supermarkets.

  1. I read the Reddit thread. Workers seem skeptical that these perks outweigh the intense pressure and speed quotas they face daily.

  2. The Whole Foods discount is clever, but remember they are already overpriced. A 20% cut just brings them to market rates.

  3. Finally! It is about time retail giants raised wages to match inflation. My cousin works at a fulfillment center and would be thrilled.

  4. Wow, $1.5 billion is a drop in the ocean compared to Amazon’s valuation. Does this really change anything substantial?

  5. $20 is still low for this cost of living. I hope the grocery discounts actually help rather than just being a gimmick.
