During her address, Haigh emphasized the urgency of significant action, describing the current moment as “a second chance” that requires greater boldness. Her appearance highlighted the strong rapport between the new Downing Street team and union leaders.
Despite the warm reception, substantial challenges remain on the horizon. The government faces critical battles over the protection of workers’ rights and decisions regarding future North Sea oil and gas drilling, tests that will determine the durability of the current political alignment with the labor movement.
Standing ovations are nice, but can they actually deliver on North Sea drilling? Actions will matter more than applause soon.
Great to see the TUC showing real appreciation for Labour’s efforts. Hopefully this momentum continues through the tough votes ahead.
