Lawyer Luka Misetic told the tribunal, “There are no orders in the record from Thaci to perpetrators of crimes. There are no reports from perpetrators of crimes to Thaci.”
The 1998-99 conflict resulted in approximately 13,000 deaths, the majority of whom were ethnic Albanians. The war concluded after a 78-day NATO bombing campaign against Serbian troops, displacing roughly one million ethnic Albanian Kosovars. Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a move Belgrade does not recognize. Relations between the two entities remain strained despite ongoing European Union-mediated negotiations.
