A Russian drone struck the central headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in Kyiv on Friday, an attack President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated was specifically aimed at the office of the agency’s head.
The blast occurred around 3:30 pm local time on Volodymyrska Street, directly opposite St. Sophia Cathedral and near the historic Golden Gate. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko initially confirmed a fire on the roof of a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district as emergency crews responded to the scene.
“I spoke with the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Oleksandr Poklad. Unfortunately, a Russian drone struck the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said in a statement. He emphasized that the projectile was “aimed directly at the office of the Head of the Security Service in that building.”
Zelenskyy announced that he had instructed Poklad to prepare a “tangible response” that mirrors the strike, assuring that the military would support the countermeasure once it is ready. As of the latest reports, there has been no immediate confirmation of casualties.
The incident took place during an active air-raid alert, with Ukraine’s air force warning of multiple drones approaching the capital. This attack is part of a recent surge in Russian daytime drone campaigns targeting Kyiv, which have increasingly disrupted daily life in the Ukrainian capital.
