SpaceX Prepares for Historic Starship Orbital Attempt on September 22

SpaceX has announced plans to attempt its first orbital insertion with the Starship super heavy-lift vehicle during the rocket’s 14th test flight, scheduled for September 22. The company revealed the date on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment for the program as it seeks to transition from suborbital testing to full orbital capability.

The launch window opens at 7:15 a.m. Central Time and remains open for 75 minutes. A key objective of this mission is the deployment of the initial batch of third-generation Starlink satellites. SpaceX intends to place 26 V3 internet satellites into orbit, which would represent the first revenue-generating event for the company’s launch division, albeit with funds cycling internally between divisions.

This mission follows the company’s successful public debut as a publicly traded entity through the largest IPO in history in June. The July test flight demonstrated Starship’s ability to deploy V3 satellites, though those upper stages were designed only to test deployment mechanisms and burned up in the atmosphere approximately 20 minutes after launch.

Achieving stable orbit with the Starship upper stage would constitute a significant milestone for SpaceX, which has invested billions into the project. CEO Elon Musk has stated that the company plans to retire its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets once Starship achieves a reliable cadence of several flights per week, thereby conserving engineering and production resources.

To meet the ambitious launch frequency promises made during the IPO, Starship must not only reach orbit but also return safely and be rapidly reused. The upcoming flight focuses on the orbital insertion phase. Musk recently indicated that attempts to catch the upper stage with the launch tower will be postponed, citing the risk of catastrophic failure from an explosion.

Concerns remain regarding the Super Heavy booster, which has experienced difficulties in recent tests. During Flight 13 in July, the booster struggled to re-light its engines after separating from the upper stage. SpaceX reports that several hardware and software modifications have been implemented to address these issues for the September mission.

Conversely, the Starship upper stage performed well during Flight 13, executing a smooth simulated landing in the Indian Ocean. The vehicle did not explode upon impact, allowing SpaceX to recover and tow it back to its Texas headquarters over the past few months. Engineers have since analyzed the returned hardware to make further adjustments to the heat shield before the next launch.
