Spotify has officially addressed a long-standing grievance among parents by introducing a toggle that excludes kids’ and family music from user taste profiles. The new feature, announced Tuesday, prevents children’s listening habits from distorting personalized playlists and the annual Spotify Wrapped experience.
The update is rolling out globally on mobile devices for both Free and Premium subscribers. Once enabled, the setting automatically filters out content such as Kidz Bop, Disney soundtracks, and trending tracks like K-Pop Demon Hunters’ “Golden” from influencing recommendations. Notably, the change is retroactive, meaning previously streamed children’s music will no longer count toward top artists or songs in Wrapped summaries.
The need for this feature stems from the practical realities of shared household accounts. While Spotify offers Family plans with separate profiles for children, parents often link smart speakers, televisions, and car systems to their own accounts to avoid restrictions. Consequently, popular tracks among younger listeners—ranging from nursery rhymes to movie soundtracks like Jack Black’s “Steve’s Lava Chicken”—frequently skew the adult account’s data.
Users have raised concerns about this issue annually since Wrapped debuted, citing frustration on community forums and social media platforms. Prior to this update, Spotify allowed users to manually exclude specific tracks or playlists, a process many found tedious. The company also recently expanded Managed Accounts for users under 13 to include parental controls, but the new toggle offers a simpler, broader solution for family sharing scenarios.
Smart speaker parents unite. This is the one update I actually needed, not some new game feature.
Finally! My Wrapped used to be ruined by Baby Shark binges. So glad this is retroactive too.
