Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina, have publicly acknowledged that a Russian businessman with close ties to the Kremlin contributed financially to their wedding celebrations. The confirmation follows an investigative report by ProPublica, which revealed that Umar Kremlev covered the costs of several events held after the couple’s May nuptials.
In an Instagram post co-signed by both Donald and Bettina Trump, they described Kremlev as a “dear friend” who “very generously hosted two incredible nights” of festivities in the Bahamas.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the celebrations. This included renting a private island in the Bahamas at approximately $100,000 per night and funding a fireworks display that cost an estimated $70,000.
“It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” the couple stated in their post. They also clarified that their wedding ceremony itself was a private affair attended only by family, and that U.S. President Donald Trump did not attend either the wedding or the subsequent parties due to ongoing talks regarding the Iran war.
Bettina Trump addressed the timing of the events, explaining that the weekend in the Bahamas had been planned well in advance as a social gathering with friends, rather than as part of the wedding schedule. She noted that when their original wedding plans changed, they simply decided to marry prior to arriving at the already-booked weekend as newlyweds.
The couple also defended the nature of their relationship with Kremlev against suggestions of political ulterior motives. “It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from,” the statement read. “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
Umar Kremlev serves as the head of the International Boxing Association (IBA). The International Olympic Committee previously severed ties with the organization led by Kremlev due to repeated warnings concerning financial governance and ethical standards. According to Russian investigative outlet Proekt, Kremlev, a native of Tajikistan, began his career as a mid-level boxing promoter before rising to prominence.
Earlier this year, in April 2026, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Kremlev the Order of Friendship during a meeting at the Kremlin with athletes and representatives of the Russian Boxing Federation.
This development adds to previous scrutiny faced by the Trump family regarding Russian connections. During the 2016 U.S. election campaign, Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian attorney, in which he sought damaging information on Hillary Clinton, became a focal point of federal and congressional investigations. A Senate Intelligence Committee report later concluded that the Russian government attempted to influence the 2016 vote in favor of Donald Trump.
