Henry Pollock Remains Open to Offers Amid Ongoing Northampton Contract Talks

Henry Pollock has stated he remains open to opportunities outside Northampton Saints as contract extension discussions persist, emphasizing his desire to make the best decision for his short professional career. The 21-year-old England back row currently sits on a deal reported to be worth approximately £150,000 per year, which concludes at the end of the upcoming season.

Pollock, who helped Northampton claim the Premiership title by defeating Exeter in June, added boxing promoter Eddie Hearn to his advisory team earlier this year. Hearn previously suggested his client was undervalued, claiming Pollock should be a “seven-figure player” and expressing shock at his current salary.

“Northampton’s been so great to me, I’ve been here my whole career and they’ve made me who I am. For me to stay here would be so special,” Pollock said. “Obviously, I know it’s not as easy as that and I know there’s lots of moving parts that come into play. I’m very open to new opportunities and I’m very open to exploring that. I’m so young so I think it’s only right that I assess those options and find the best decision for myself.”

The young forward added: “Your career is so short that you look back on yourself and you almost regret not exploring new avenues, exploring different things. I think for me, you almost have to be quite selfish in that aspect, think what’s right for you. If that is staying here, then that’s great, I’ll be here for however long. If it’s not, then I’ll be open to new opportunities.”

While a move to a rival Premiership side would be complicated by salary cap regulations preventing players from being designated as marquee talent, destinations in France or Japan could offer significant financial gains. However, such a move starting in the 2027-28 season would carry risks for Pollock’s international prospects. He would lose his England central contract, also valued at around £150,000 annually, and would become ineligible for England once he plays overseas, potentially impacting his chances for the next year’s Rugby World Cup squad.

Additionally, playing abroad could affect his commercial earnings, as he currently benefits from endorsement deals with various clothing brands that rely on the visibility provided by Test matches and domestic rugby.

Despite the complexity of the negotiations, Northampton director of rugby Phil Dowson expressed confidence that a deal can be reached. Reports indicate the club has made an offer raising Pollock’s wages to £400,000 per year. Dowson noted that while there are several factors to align, both parties are keen to proceed.

“We’re getting closer,” Dowson said. “As you can imagine, it’s complex. There’s a few moving parts that we need to put together, but I’m hopeful. As I said before, he wants to stay and we want to keep him. Obviously there’s some negotiations going between that but those two things are very positive.”

The Saints are currently managing a broader contract renewal strategy following the summer departure of captain George Furbank to Harlequins. Fly-half Fin Smith agreed to new terms last October, while wing Tommy Freeman, scrum-half Archie McParland, and prop Emmanuel Iyogun are also prioritized for new deals this season.
