Original ‘Star Wars’ Film to Receive First-Ever IMAX Release in 2027

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the original 1977 theatrical release of “Star Wars” will be screened in IMAX theaters for the first time, marking the lead-up to the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The milestone re-release is scheduled for February 19, 2027, arriving shortly before the official anniversary date of May 25, 1977.

Audiences can expect to view the legendary space opera in either digital or physical film formats, depending on the capabilities of the specific IMAX location. Additionally, a limited number of venues equipped with 70mm IMAX projectors will screen the film. This presentation features a newly restored print that removes the “A New Hope” subtitle, Special Edition modifications, and CGI enhancements, restoring the movie to its original theatrical appearance.

Following this historic re-release, the next chapter in the saga, “Star Wars: Starfighter,” will arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. The standalone sci-fi adventure is directed and produced by Shawn Levy, known for his work on “Real Steel,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and “Stranger Things.” Ryan Gosling stars as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue grappling with a mysterious past, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, and others.

Unlike the classic re-release, “Starfighter” was shot specifically for IMAX using certified digital cameras framed for the IMAX aspect ratio. It is being converted into IMAX 70mm film prints for exhibition at select IMAX venues across the United States. Tickets for both the original film’s IMAX run and the premiere of “Starfighter” will be available through official IMAX channels.
