President Donald Trump on Monday firmly rejected mounting pressure from industry leaders to regulate artificial intelligence, launching a verbal attack on Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei while defending his administration’s strategy of rapid technological expansion.
Responding to Amodei’s recent blog post urging a slowdown in AI model development, Trump posted on Truth Social that the only necessary controls are “a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT,” adding that the United States has such leadership “in spades.”
The president further criticized Amodei, accusing the Anthropic chief of hypocrisy. “The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel,'” Trump wrote.
Trump asserted that existing legal frameworks are already sufficient. “We already have tremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies!” he stated, alleging a “SICK conspiracy” against AI development.
The comments come amid an unusual coalition of tech executives calling for caution. On Saturday, Amodei published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” arguing that slowing progress would reduce the risk of catastrophic failures. The urgency was heightened earlier in the week when a former Anthropic researcher resigned, warning that AI could “kill us all by the end of the decade” and accusing major labs of gambling with human survival.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX’s Elon Musk also signaled support for the slowdown over the weekend, aligning themselves with Amodei’s concerns.
Despite these appeals, the Trump administration continues to prioritize aggressive AI growth, viewing technological supremacy over China as an existential priority. This stance has led to the promotion of controversial data center projects across the U.S., even as critics raise alarms about the speed at which these powerful systems are being deployed.
