Derbyshire batsman Aneurin Donald has been handed a T20 international debut as he joins the England lineup for the opening match against Sri Lanka at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday evening. The fixture, which kicks off at 6:30pm UK time, will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Donald, a 29-year-old Welshman, is set to partner Jos Buttler at the top of the order. Phil Salt will miss the three-match series due to a quad injury. Donald arrives in fine form, having scored 489 runs across 12 Vitality Blast games this season, including four half-centuries and a tournament-leading 37 sixes.
His domestic success was complemented by a standout performance for the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, where he struck 38 runs from just 19 balls, although his side ultimately fell to Buttler’s Manchester Super Giants in the final.
England head coach Brendon McCullum praised Donald’s potential, noting that the right-hander possesses “raw power” and has been monitored by the national setup for some time. McCullum highlighted Donald’s ability to attack from the first ball, drawing comparisons to the style of Salt.
Statistics from Cricinfo indicate that Donald boasts the second-highest T20 strike-rate since 2024, recording a rate of 215.70 across 48 innings. He trails only Indian teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who holds the top spot with a strike-rate of 216.30.
In team news, fast bowler Jofra Archer has been rested for the Southampton contest following his workload during England’s recent Test series victory over Pakistan. McCullum confirmed that Archer’s pace battery teammate, Josh Tongue, who also featured in all three Tests, is expected to be given a break for the second T20 in Cardiff on Thursday.
The full England XI for the first T20 includes Harry Brook (captain), Tom Banton, Jordan Cox, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Sonny Baker, and Adil Rashid. Jacob Bethell and Sam Curran are ruled out of the series through knee and groin injuries, respectively.
The T20 series concludes at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday, September 19. This will be followed by a three-match One Day International series beginning in Durham on Tuesday, September 22.
