Senior European Union officials have issued a unified condemnation of a Russian drone strike that hit a passenger train in Ukraine, calling the incident an attempt to intimidate Western allies and vowing to redouble their support for Kyiv.
The attack occurred in Ukraine’s Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the Polish border. According to reports, the drone struck the locomotive at a railway station shortly after a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European envoys had departed the site.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the assault was designed to frighten nations away from backing Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in Finland while attending a summit on Arctic strategy, she emphasized that the bloc’s response should be the opposite of retreat.
“I think we should act the opposite. We should show that we are there for Ukraine and we are not scared,” Kallas said.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo described the attack as evidence of Russia’s escalating aggression. He called for enhanced aid to Ukraine and stricter penalties against Moscow, including additional political measures and sanctions. “We are united here in Europe,” Orpo affirmed.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda warned that the attack signaled Russia’s broader ambition to challenge the rule of law and democratic lifestyles across the continent, rather than targeting specific geographic areas. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot echoed this sentiment, asserting that the goal was to drive a wedge between European nations.
Barrot noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has spent the last five years increasing pressure on the EU and NATO because he recognizes that their strength lies in unity. “As long as we stand together, nothing can intimidate us,” Barrot said.
German Foreign Minister Boris Pistorius urged caution regarding potential escalation. While describing the drone approaches near the border as a serious matter, he stressed the need to avoid being drawn into a broader conflict. Meanwhile, the Kremlin offered a brief comment, reiterating that its forces operate across all of Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that the incident demonstrated that Putin considers Russia to be effectively at war with Europe, adding that “Putin’s terror is literally knocking at the door of the European Union and NATO.”
