Nine New Deep-Sea Sponge Species Discovered Off Alaska Coast

Scientists have identified nine previously unknown species of deep-sea sponges in Alaskan waters, shedding light on the rich but poorly understood marine biodiversity of the region. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) revealed the findings on Thursday, noting that the sponges were located in the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

The discovery increases the cataloged number of sponge species in Alaska to 232. However, researchers warn that these organisms face significant environmental pressures. Their habitats are increasingly threatened by bottom trawling activities in the area, as well as proposed expansions of seafloor mining under the current administration.

  1. Let me get this straight. They found new life forms, but the same administration proposing mining expansions caused the damage?

  2. Nine new species is exciting, but the threats mentioned are terrifying. We need to protect these fragile habitats now.
