North Korea has asserted that its recent live-fire military exercise showcased “huge destructive power,” according to state media reports released Monday. The drill, which took place over the weekend, serves as a direct response to the conclusion of five days of joint maritime operations involving the United States, South Korea, and Japan.
State news agency KCNA reported that the Saturday event involved five army units engaging in a coordinated attack utilizing a variety of weapon systems, including attack drones, tactical cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles. The agency stated the objective was to enhance troop morale and refine capabilities to “completely collapse the enemy.”
KCNA cited North Korean Marshal Pak Jong Chon, who described the exercise as a demonstration of “the huge destructive power of concentrated fire.” He added that the goal was to improve the specialization required to structurally dismantle the enemy’s armed forces upon receiving orders.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that several missiles were launched on Saturday, traveling approximately 250 kilometers (155 miles) into waters off North Korea’s east coast. Analysts note that the range indicates these weapons are designed to target locations within South Korea, including US military installations.
The exercise occurred just one day after the US, South Korea, and Japan wrapped up their trilateral drills, which Pyongyang views as provocative. In August, US President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to significantly scale back the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise with South Korea, citing his rapport with Kim Jong Un. However, North Korea dismissed the reduction, maintaining that shortening the duration did not alter the aggressive nature of the drills.
Despite the US decision to end the exercise six days earlier than planned, experts suggest that North Korea is not decelerating its weapons development. Kim Jong Un is believed to feel increasingly confident in his negotiating position, stemming from his early meetings with Trump in 2018 and 2019. Earlier this year, Kim indicated he would consider returning to diplomatic talks only if the US abandoned what he termed a “hostile policy” and formally recognized North Korea’s status as a nuclear state.
