Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey maintained its dominance at the South Korean box office during the Sept. 11–13 weekend, securing its sixth consecutive run at number one. According to data from the Korean Film Council’s tracking service KOBIS, the tentpole grossed $3.9 million from 449,474 admissions across 1,648 screens, capturing 51.4% of the total weekend market.
Since its Aug. 5 release, the film has accumulated $89.6 million locally, driven by 10,782,715 total admissions.
The new release Obsession surged to second place in its sophomore weekend, earning $1.4 million from 176,479 viewers on 845 screens. The film accounted for 18.6% of the weekend box office, pushing its cumulative domestic gross to $3.7 million from 474,818 admissions.
In third place, the superhero entry Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued its long theatrical run during its seventh weekend. The film generated $544,123 from 84,719 admissions, representing 7% of the market. Its local tally now stands at $68.7 million against 8,930,413 tickets sold.
The Drama debuted in fourth place, collecting $223,340 from 29,512 admissions over its three-day opening window across 616 screens. Since its Sept. 9 premiere, the picture has grossed $404,575 from 53,631 total admissions.
The family road-trip film The Journey to Gyeongju held fifth position, bringing in $124,071 from 17,206 admissions. Directed by Kim Mi-jo and featuring an ensemble cast including Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon, and Byun Yo-han, the revenge-tinged drama has reached $2.3 million in total viewership.
Other notable entries included Power Ballad at sixth place with $110,283, and the sci-fi thriller Hope, which rebounded into the top 10 at seventh. Directed by Na Hong-Jin and starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, Hope added $125,591 this weekend, raising its national gross to $36.2 million.
Toho’s anime film Inuyasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time, directed by Toshiya Shinohara, entered the chart at eighth with $89,975. Local family crime drama Portrait of a Family, helmed by Lee Ji-won and starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Ha Ji-won, finished ninth after earning $66,614. Animated adventure Forgotten Island rounded out the top 10 with $70,125 from preview screenings ahead of its wide Sept. 23 launch.
The overall South Korean box office collected $7.6 million for the weekend, a decline from the $9.8 million recorded the previous week.
