Shelton, aiming to become the first Black American to win the title since Arthur Ashe in 1968, fought valiantly but could not overcome Zverev’s dominance in the majors this season.
In a moment of bewilderment upon securing the final point, Zverev initially failed to realize he had won. He dropped back behind the baseline as if preparing to receive serve before raising his arms in celebration only moments later. The usually stoic player became emotional during his post-match remarks, reflecting on the support of his coaching staff and family.
“We went 30 years without winning a Grand Slam title, and then won two in the span of three months,” Zverev said. “I think God has seen how hard we have worked and suffered, and the pain we went through. 2026 was the outcome for everything that we went through before.”
Zverev also dedicated his success to his mother, who provided crucial support after he was diagnosed with diabetes as a child. “When your four-year-old son gets diagnosed with diabetes, and that sport will be difficult, it takes a very strong mother to say that he will be whatever he wants to be,” he said. “This illness will not define us. Thanks to her as well.”
The world number two praised his 23-year-old opponent, predicting that Shelton would eventually win the tournament. Shelton, visibly somber, acknowledged the dedication of his family, stating, “To do this with my family by my side. These four guys have dedicated their lives to my career. It is an unmatched level of commitment.”
