Indonesian search and rescue teams launched an operation on Sunday to locate 140 missing passengers aboard the Virgo Transport 8 ferry, which lost contact during severe weather in the Java Sea.
According to a spokesperson for the country’s search and rescue agency, the vessel had been carrying more than 240 people when it went missing early Sunday. While emergency crews managed to evacuate 103 individuals from the ship, 104 others remain unaccounted for.
Among those who were brought to safety, one passenger died, officials confirmed.
